Scenic Sydney Helicopter Tour

With only a few days to explore all of Sydney, I was in search of a unique experience that would allow me to see the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and countless beautiful beaches. As usual, I turned to the trusty hashtag on Instagram to find ideas from fellow travelers and Aussie locals. After posting #SydneyScenicTour #HELP, someone suggested the idea of a helicopter tour over the city.

I had never considered the possibility of touring the city by ‘copter, mostly due to the perceived cost and the fact that I get severe motion sickness with the slightest breeze.

At the recommendation of a friend, I booked with Sydney HeliTours. I was thrilled to see the many affordable options, from scenic flights to the “doors-off” adrenalin adventure! They even offer aerial photography flights for professionals looking to capture high quality footage from a bird’s eye view.

I chose the popular Twilight Flight, with stunning views over the harbour, coastline, and picturesque beaches.

What You Should Know

1. If you’re prone to motion sickness like me, don’t sweat it! You’ve probably experienced more turbulence on a commercial flight. Riding in a helicopter feels more like a hovering spacecraft — one moment you’re on the ground and the next you’re up in the air, without ever noticing the ascent.

2. Don’t be offended when your pilot asks you to step on the scale prior to the flight. It’s important to balance out the weight of all passengers. Your seat placement will also be determined by your weight relative to other passengers.

3. The noise-canceling headphones allow you to clearly hear the pilot when he gives commentary on the views below. You can also speak to the pilot and fellow passengers, but don’t worry — only the pilot can communicate with the airport tower.

4. For high quality pictures, make sure you avoid capturing reflections off the glass. Shoot on continuous burst mode and wear dark clothing to reduce your own reflection.

I can’t say enough great things about the crew at Sydney HeliTours. They are professional, knowledgeable and a lot of fun! They made me feel right at ease and provided really interesting, fun facts about Sydney throughout the flight. The views were absolutely breathtaking and unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.
